OHSAS 18000 - Occupational
Health & Safety Assesment System
OHSAS 18000 is an international
occupational health and safety management system
specification consisting of two parts, 18001 and
18002, also embracing BS8800 and a number of other
publications.
OHSAS 18001 was created via a concerted effort
from a number of the world’s leading national
standards bodies, certification bodies, and specialist
consultancies.
The OHSAS 18000 series of standards that includes
OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management
Systems (OHSMS) grew out of the international
success of the ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 series of
Standards and the need for managing safety in
the work environment.
Occupational Health & Safety is usually practiced
to prevent injury and ill health of employees,
and to comply with relevant legislation and standards.
The benefits of improved Health & Safety performance
of enterprises are generally accepted and can
include cost reduction, improved image (esp. on
the international market), and employee motivation.Additionally,
in the modern society also the health promotion
of employees in the workplace and a comfortable
work environment are aimed for.

Therefore, more and more enterprises prepare and
implement their own policies and objectives for
Occupational Health & Safety.
Management systems for Occupational Health and
Safety (OH&S MS) have proved to be an effective
tool to organize and focus a company's efforts
for minimizing work-related hazards where technical
improvements and legal surveillance find their
limitations. Like other systematic approaches
to management, they have contributed to improved
business performance. The virtues of OH&S
MS are also underlined and reflected by the development
of the ILO "Guidelines on occupational safety
and health management systems".
